Pacific chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) — wild pelagic from Chile

Overview

Pacific chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) is a key pelagic species in Chilean waters and a staple of FoodCorp's export programme. With its characteristic striped appearance, firm texture and rich flavour, chub mackerel is in strong demand for human consumption — both as frozen whole round and as raw material for canning lines.

FoodCorp lands chub mackerel through its own fleet and selected supplier vessels, moving catch quickly to the Coronel processing plant. Whole round fish are graded by size, blast-frozen through tunnel freezers and packed in standard 20 kg net cartons for export. Headed-and-gutted forms are also available for buyers who prefer a semi-processed product.

Chub mackerel complements jack mackerel in FoodCorp's pelagic portfolio, giving importers access to two distinct Scombrid species from a single accountable Chilean supplier. The species is particularly well suited to canning programmes — both FoodCorp's own RO-200 and Tall 425 g lines and third-party canneries — as well as whole round export to West African and Asian food markets. Frequently asked questions

How is Pacific chub mackerel different from jack mackerel?

What packing do you use?

Standard export packing is carton 20 kg net for whole round and H&G frozen chub mackerel. Other formats can be discussed for programme buyers.

Can you supply for canning?

Yes. Chub mackerel is a primary raw material for our canned mackerel lines and is also supplied to third-party canneries in whole round and H&G forms.
